Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which women typically have a number of small cysts around the edge of their ovaries (polycystic ovaries). They also have one or more additional symptoms.Symptoms of PCOS include irregular or light periods, problems getting pregnant, weight gain, acne and excessive hair growth.

Researchers from University of New South Wales has published a new research about acupuncture and PCOS.

They found that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment to PCOS as the adverse effects of pharmacologic interventions are not expected by women with PCOS. Acupuncture therapy may have a role in PCOS by: increasing of blood flow to the ovaries, reducing of ovarian volume and the number of ovarian cysts, controlling hyperglycaemia through increasing insulin sensitivity and decreasing blood glucose and insulin levels, reducing cortisol levels and assisting in weight loss and anorexia. However, well-designed, randomised controlled trials are needed to elucidate the true effect of acupuncture on PCOS.

Physicians are in a continuous quest for identifying undercover problems and introducing solutions for this endocrinal disorder. In the recent years, PCOS is being much talked about on different talk shows, forums, chat-rooms, email lists, and websites. Moreover, with the influx of many interactive forums on the internet, women can communicate with other women on different platforms and share their experiences and be more aware of their health issues.
